Oral irrigation--a great way to clean your teeth
We have recommended oral irrigators (i.e. Hydro Floss, Water Pik, Viajet, etc.) for
many years. Even so, patients still ask if they should get one. Here is some guidance.
Oral irrigators are useful in many situations:
Prevention of dental disease- An oral irrigator's high pressure water stream easily
removes food debris and decreases the concentration of harmful bacteria and their
by-products.
Braces- It's not easy cleaning around bands, brackets, and wires. Pulsating jets of
water loosen particles easily and effectively.
Periodontal (gum) problems- An irrigator can flush out particles above and below the gum
line, as well as deliver anti-bacterial solutions.
Implants- The gum tissue supporting dental implants needs to be meticulously cleaned.
Irrigators can be a big plus here!
Crowns and bridges- Like braces, crowns and bridges can be difficult to maintain.
Irrigators remove debris lodged around and under bridgework and are especially useful in
hard to reach areas.
Oral irrigators are easy to use and highly effective in preventing dental disease and
maintaining a healthy mouth.
